05:02 pm - Grandmothers,complaining, and taffy pulls

I was talking to a co-worker. She was complaining about not having a date in several years. Said that people told her that she was too negative. (which is quite true; her negative attitude sure turned me off). Then, at the end of the conversation she said that she had to go. "Well, I need to go home and give medicine to my grandmother. She wouldn't ever take her medicine if I didn't force her to. So that's really all I do now. etc. etc." Yup, she was pouring out negative energy. So I called her on it. "But you like your grandmother, right? And if she's eighty years old she probly has some really good stories." She told me that she loved listening to her grandmother's stories, that that's one of the cool things they do together.

Then she told me about how her mother used to go to taffy pulls. That was what teenagers did in her time. But her mom didn't trust the taffy pulls. Said that all sorts of trouble started at a taffy pull, so she wouldn't let her daughters go. Of course, they would sneak off anyway. Then their mother would send their father after them. When they saw him they would run home and he would chase. But my friend's grandmother ran faster than her sister and so she always got home safe and her sister got a whipping.

I told her that was a great story, and she should tell it to people instead of bitching about having to take care of her grandmother. I gave her an assignment: "You have to tell that story to ten people in the next three weeks." She said, "well I told it to you, so now I've got nine more to go. Three a week."

Today I asked her if she had told anyone yet. She said that she had told it twice, and one of the times it led into this whole huge discussion about all sorts of things. Yay, glad to see it's working.

OK, I'm delinquent in posting this, but here's my concert info. This is going to be a really cool concert. Our violin soloist is amazing, and I get to play timpani on Bald Mountain.

12:21 am - Chess and Kids

My kids are in chess club. They're really excited about it, too. Tonight we went over some opening moves, then we played a couple of games. They go to chess class every Wednessday. They've learned castling and en passant, and pins and forks. And they really enjoy it, and they're also really getting better. My daughter has actually beaten me once now.

This really is a dream come true. I wanted to have children who could play chess, and enjoy it. And now I do. It's really nice to see that something I really wanted has happened. Yea!

04:59 pm - Please Disturb Me

I wear headphones at work. It helps me concentrate and zone out and block out irrelevant sound. But I want to be available for people at all times. But some people come by to talk to me, see that I've got headphones on, and they leave. Or, worse yet, they try to get my attention, fail, and then leave. So I printed up a sign and taped it to the back of my chair. It says:

Please
Disturb
Me

I’m here to help and to work with y’all.
Please get my attention if you want to talk to me.

I wear headphones, partly to block out the construction noise. They’re noise canceling, so I can’t hear you when I’m wearing them. So please get my attention another way. Waving your hand in my field of vision works well at getting my attention.

This girl that I used to be married to was a typist in college. One day someone came in and asked her to retype a paper. It was a paper that this guys friend had turned in when he took the class last semester. He said, "yeah, just type it exactly like this, but put my name at the top". What class was this for? It was for a class in business ethics.

12:42 pm - Cool Funeral

My new office is right next to a cemetery. Today there was a really cool funeral there. They had six dumptrucks who all blew their horns as everyone at the funeral release balloons into the air. I wanna have something like that at my funeral.

05:29 pm - Orchestra

Had a rehearsal for the orchestra last night. I'm playing timpani on Phantom of the Opera. It's really exciting. We (the percussionists) hit a really cool grove on the Samba portion of Evita. What I really like about the orchestra is that it's hard. Seems like so few of the things I do in my life are hard. It's nice to have something that's really stretching my abilities.
